Mercedes-AMG GLE 53 performance SUV is a 48V mild hybrid

Mercedes-AMG has unveiled the GLE 53—the performance offering for the new GLE generation. The basis for the signature AMG driving dynamics is provided by the 429 hp 3.0-liter six-cylinder in-line engine, the fully variable all-wheel drive, the 9-speed automatic transmission, the AMG-specific drive programs and the AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL based on AIRMATIC with electro-mechanical roll stabilization. The GLE 53 accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds. The centerpiece is the electrified 3.0-liter engine featuring turbocharging and an electric auxiliary compressor. The 6-cylinder in-line engine generates 429 hp and delivers maximum torque of 384 lb-ft (521 N·m). Its EQ Boost starter generator briefly provides an additional 21 hp of output plus 184 lb-ft (249 N·m) of torque and additionally feeds the 48 V on-board electrical system. The EQ Boost starter-generator combines a starter and generator in a powerful electric motor and is fitted between the engine and transmission. This system, as well as the intelligent charging via an electric auxiliary compressor and an exhaust gas turbocharger, all have the same goal: to enhance the hallmark AMG performance and driving dynamics, b...

The Hard-Milling Imperative : Modern Machine Shop

A job shop that specializes in hard milling shows why this technique is becoming indispensable for mold manufacturers. Hard milling allows mold components to be machined in the hardened state, thus skipping several expensive and time-consuming processes such as electrical discharge machining and hand polishing. Hard milling requires a certain type of machining center, tool holding system and programming software. The requirements for each of these elements are explained. Corey Greenwald (above right) and Kevin Hunter inspect the details of a mold block produced on one of the shop’s Makino V56 vertical machining centers. This block (right) is made of hardened H13 tool steel. A 1.0-mm diameter ballnose end mill with a 12:1 length to diameter ratio was the smallest tool used in this project, which substantially reduced EDM and polishing operations for the customer. A complete and accurate model of the cutting tool in its holder allows the programming software to check for possible collisions or gouging of the workpiece with 100 percent accuracy, thus allowing predictable, unattended cutting. The entire surface of this mold cavity was milled in the hardened state to a 12-rms finish ...

We can all try our hardest to be our own, unique individuals, but at the end

We can all try our hardest to be our own, unique individuals, but at the end of the day, you have to admit that there are some situations in which popularity equates to quality. That restaurant down the block that’s never busy is probably empty because the food is tasteless. It’s the same as how some of the absolute best products on Amazon have more than 5,000 reviews — because they’re awesome. While I like rocking to the beat of my own drum just as much as anybody else, I’ll admit that you should probably draw a line in the sand when it comes to spending money. Is taking a chance on a product that has zero reviews thrilling? Of course! But once my order finally arrives and I discover that I’ve spent $20 on a pair of shoe insoles that are thinner than notebook paper, I’d probably choose getting my money back over the adrenaline rush of an impulse purchase. Still, just because something is popular doesn’t mean it needs to also be expensive. There are tons of things under $15 on Amazon that are legitimately amazing, and luckily for you, we’ve picked out the cream of the crop; that way, you don’t have to go wander through the vi...

With the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death coming up this summer, there’s a lot of

With the 20th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death coming up this summer, there’s a lot of buzz around the Royals. When Prince Charles married Princess Diana in 1981, her style set the tone for an entire generation and her jewelry was no exception. In 2010, that iconic sapphire engagement ring was passed down to Kate Middleton when Prince William proposed. Many other pieces worn by the Royal family have inspired beautiful replica pieces. Depending on what you read Prince Harry may be just minutes away from getting down on one knee to ask Megan Markle to be his bride and we can only imagine that ring he chooses to give his betrothed will inspire replica rings all over the world for decades to come. Rumor has it that Kate and Megan were just minutes away from choosing the SAME dress to wear to Kate’s sister Pipa’s wedding coming up in a few weeks. There’s no bigger faux pas than wearing the same dress, but for the Royals, showcasing the family collection of jewels is very much encouraged. Whether you’re an avid royal watcher or just a casual fan, we think you’ll be impressed by these gorgeous pieces that are guaranteed to make you feel like Royal. One of the most classic pieces o...

Cheap face masks: $5 Garnier sheet mask from Priceline

GOOD skin doesn’t have to be expensive. We found the cheap beauty product you can get from the supermarket that is just as good as its pricey counterparts. Australian skin care brand MooGoo Skin Care shows you how to make your own moisturiser at home. Credit: Facebook/MooGoo Skin Care The Beauty Diary will road test products and interview famous Aussie women about their beauty routines.Source:Supplied GIVE me a woman who says she walked into Chemist Warehouse and came out with only one product, and I’ll show you a liar. Last week I went to buy deodorant. I emerged with a new serum, a sheet mask, some overpriced organic cotton tampons and zero regrets. If shopping for beauty products at the chemist or supermarket were an Olympic sport, I’d be the Grant Hackett of budget beauty — pre-Stilnox meltdown. It’s absolutely possible to form a great skincare routine solely from products bought during your grocery shop. “The price of a product does not necessarily correlate with its effectiveness. Often a large part of the cost of expensive products is ‘luxury’ packaging and advertising,” Dr Michelle Hunt, a Fellow of the Australasian College of Dermatologists, said. This first instalment...

All I-40 lanes to reopen in NC mountains after rock slide

All four Interstate 40 lanes in the North Carolina mountains are scheduled to reopen before sunrise Wednesday after months of repair, state highway officials said Tuesday. Drivers have endured detours and lane closures since the Feb. 22 rock slide initially closed both sides of the interstate near Tennessee, according to the NC Department of Transportation. Both sides of the highway remained closed for five days, then some lanes were reopened as work continued to stabilize the slide area. The status of the lanes has changed several times since the rock slide, but this is the first time in three months all four lanes will be open. Debris continued to fall the morning after the slide as engineers surveyed the area, The Charlotte Observer reported at the time. The rock slide was caused by heavy rain, according to the transportation department. An estimated 27,000 cubic yards of debris fell in the westbound lanes, then spilled into the eastbound lanes, NCDOT officials said. It happened near the Harmon Den exit in Haywood County. On Tuesday afternoon, a contractor was “wrapping up the final tasks” to reopen all the lanes, NCDOT officials wrote in an online update. “In some ways it f...

49 Dead in Alleged ‘Eco-Fascist’ Attack on 2 New Zealand Mosques

At least 49 people are dead and dozens more injured following shooting attacks Friday at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand. Officials there have arrested the alleged gunman, who livestreamed his assaults on Facebook and is apparently the author of a racist, anti-immigrant, and “eco-fascist” manifesto. Several bombs were also found in the area. Eyewitnesses describe a horrific scene in which men, women, and children were all shot. “There were bodies all over me,” one witness told stuff.co.nz. There was “blood everywhere,” another said to Radio New Zealand. The manifesto denies that the killer acted in search of fame (“After all who can remember the name of the attackers in the September 11 attack in New York?”) and explicitly describes his murders as a terrorist act. His chief grievance is a “crisis of mass immigration and sub-replacement fertility” that he believes amounts to “white genocide,” a common charge on the racist right. In addition to the suspected shooter, two other men and one woman have been detained, according to The New York Times. Their connection to the attack is not clear, and police...

What you can bring, how to get tickets for Buffalo’s outdoor concerts

It’s a question we all ask before going to outdoor summer events and it starts with the same three words: “Can I bring … ?” Can I bring food? Can I bring my dog? Can I bring a chair? The list goes on. The one variation: Where can I buy tickets? Thankfully our major outdoor venues including Artpark, Canalside and Darien Lake, have slowly adopted similar rules on what you can and can’t bring in to an event. In fact, outside of differences on umbrellas (yes at Artpark, no at Canalside Live and Erie County Fair concerts), the rules are nearly identical. Here is a general list to follow for most outdoor venues, plus information on when gates open, how to get tickets and any bonuses you get with your paid ticket, like park admission. Remember to always give yourself extra time to have your bags checked at the entrance. Though some prohibited items, like weapons, should be obvious to leave at home, remember that the venue has the final word on what it considers dangerous or inappropriate. When in doubt, leave it in the car. You can bring • Small bags, diaper bags and purses (general rule: no larger than 12 inches by 12 inches) • Small folding chairs • Small blanket •...

When you think of the glamour bodyparts to train in the gym, you often think first

When you think of the glamour bodyparts to train in the gym, you often think first of the so-called “mirror muscles.” These are the muscles that every guy loves to train, and the ones that you can always see easily—chest, arms, abs, and shoulders. But if you really want to that perfect superhero physique, you have to build a ripped and chiseled back, too. Specifically, you have to hit your lats, the wide, fan-shaped muscles that loom large along your back. The perfect physique doesn’t really come together without a muscular back that tapers in width from shoulders to waist. And that taper is really a product of lat development. Training your lats, however, feels boring to some and daunting to others, because sometimes, we think of pull-ups as our only option. But there are a host of exercises that can get the job done. Here are 10 moves that will really develop your lats. Make sure you’re hitting 2 or 3 of these moves at least once a week to round out your physique. In order to work your lats you have to understand them at least a little: They’re the large, triangle-shaped muscles on the back, creating a thick taper from shoulder to waist. The muscle inserts into the upper part ...
